Oyster Habitat Investigations for Rookery Island Enhancement

This project is a natural resources investigation to evaluate approximately 100 acres in Aransas Bay, TX for shoreline protection and restoration alternatives. In particular, quantifiable data on oyster characteristics, including density and size frequency distribution, will be collected. The Coastal Conservation and Restoration Ecology Lab will conduct 40 regularly spaced diver-quadrats on the bay bottom, and collect all surficial bottom material within, including live oysters. Samples will be quantified for live oyster density and size frequency distribution of live oysters. Up to 20 additional quadrat samples will be collected in areas that require fine scale investigation (e.g., high densities of live oysters encountered). Data on oyster density and size will be used to illustrate spatial trends in live oyster abundance and size within the study area.
